Inter-species bonds are much stronger than many imagine. Serge, a German Shepherd, is living proof of this by developing an exceptional relationship with an orphaned fawn named Buckwheat.
Once taciturn and inclined towards discipline, Serge transformed his behavior when he welcomed Buckwheat into his home, according to a September 2022 article published by Animal Channel. Serge’s paternal instinct manifested instantly, providing the young fawn with the affection and protection he so desperately needed.
Over time, Buckwheat grew, eventually reaching maturity allowing him to return to the wild. Buckwheat’s departure left a void in Serge’s heart, but their story touched many people, spreading the fame of this unlikely duo.
Inspired by Serge’s dedication, the owners of the German Shepherd continued to welcome other orphaned fawns, allowing Serge to continue his mission as a foster father. His acute sense of smell even enabled him to detect sick or injured fawns, demonstrating his unwavering devotion to his charges.
Although Serge left us a year ago, his legacy endures. Chief, a young puppy, now takes up the mantle of this noble mission, ensuring that Serge’s love and compassion continue through the generations to come.
